Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was prepared to inform a proposal to redevelop land located at the western edge of Byker, part of the urban conurbation of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The area was once covered in mid 19th century housing and businesses, presently all removed except two individual buildings, one of which was the 'Cumberland Arms' public house. A row of 1960s maisonettes had also been recently removed. Two newly built commercial premises occupied part of the area, while the remainder was either landscaped or set aside for modern allotments. A piece of public art also stood within the study area. The northern extent of the study area lay within the corridor of Hadrian's Wall, an UNESCO World Heritage Site and for most of its course, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. However only a small area of the Wall in this area was Scheduled (although this designated area did not reflect the existence of a proven piece of Wall or one of its milecastles) and only part of that Scheduled Area lay within the study area. In addition to the presence of the World Heritage Site there was the potential for encountering prehistoric features and also evidence of early 19th century industrial activity, particularly the dumping of pottery kiln waste. Further the amenity character of one of the surviving buildings, the 'Cumberland Arms' public house, needed to be considered. [Au(abr)] |
