Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as a pre planning enquiry. It was proposed to build a hotel with ancillary access and parking. The assessment indicated that the proposed development was located near to known sites of archaeological significance. It was situated close to a major Roman road which was known to have been a focus of settlement. It was close to a Neolithic/Bronze Age ring ditch which often represented the location of former burial areas. Iron Age pottery and a pit alignment had been reported to the north-west and south of the site and may have indicated the presence of a nearby Iron Age settlement. Therefore the area had considerable archaeological potential. The development was likely to have considerable impact on any surviving archaeological deposits. The report recommended further archaeological investigation, in the form of staged field trials including geophysocal survey and trial trenching. [Au(adp)] |
