Abstract: |
Archaeological observation and recording was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission and Listed Building Consent for the change of use of the grade II listed barn to a demonstration kitchen and function room. The 19th century threshing barn stood on part of the site of the Gilbertine Priory of Newstead-in-Ancholme, thought to have been founded in 1171 by Henry II. The report concluded that, looked at as a whole, the stone walled threshing barn appeared to have contained relatively few reused mouldings, other than in its external quoins and major openings. However, dismantling of a small part of one wall revealed that far more moulded pieces had been used in the barn's construction than were visible in its elevations, probably due to the builders' desire to create a smooth wall elevation. The one obvious moulding had been chopped back as much as possible, so that it might present a relatively vertical face to the barn interior. The four moulded stones recovered from the barn wall were all fairly simple in form and lacked any significant stylistic detail. However, there was little doubt that all of these stones could have dated to the medieval period and derived from the monastic buildings of the Gilbertine priory. It was more than likely that most, and maybe all, of the smaller building stones also came from the same source. Nothing of any archaeological significance was either destroyed or learnt as a result of the excavation of service trenches across the yard. [Au(adp)] |
