Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which formed part of a 19th century farmyard near the centre of the village of Bleadon, which had been mentioned in a charter of 956 AD. A site relating to the medieval manor had been recorded immediately to the west, and medieval pottery had been found in the vicinity. Prehistoric activity had also been recorded nearby, in the form of scatters of flint flakes and arrowheads, and Neolithic polished stone tools. During the evaluation, which was undertaken in two stages, features containing Late Bronze Age pottery were revealed. These included a pit group, further isolated pits, ditches and post holes. One pit contained a human skull, and probably represented a complete inhumation burial, whilst another contained intertwined dog skeletons. Other pits contained disarticulated and fragmentary human bones and animal bone. A ditch relating to medieval agricultural activity was also revealed, whilst evidence of post-medieval and modern activity was represented by two phases of foundations relating to a barn, and by pits, post holes and recent foundations. It was recommended that the archaeological remains should be preserved in situ, and that a comprehensive programme of research-orientated archaeological fieldwork should be undertaken if preservation were not possible.
