Abstract: |
The detailed magnetometer survey confirmed that many of the magnetometer and susceptibility responses as noted in the preliminary survey were probably of non-archaeological origin, and suggested that it was unlikely that substantial concentrations of magnetically detectable archaeological features were present within the areas investigated. Other features detected by the detailed survey included pit-like anomalies seen in areas C and E, and linear and curving features Y and Z in areas C and D. The possibility that these could be archaeologically significant could not be fully excluded on the survey evidence alone, but the potential pits were too dispersed to suggested that a concentration or focus of settlement or industrial features was present. It would perhaps be possible during a future watching brief to determine whether the curving ditch-like magnetic anomaly at Z in area D forms part of a larger feature or structure, or whether this and the linear anomaly at Y in area C represent silted channels or ditches draining into the former valley.
