Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that archaeological sites and findspots ranging in date from the Palaeolithic to the post-medieval period had been recorded in the surrounding area. Palaeolithic material comprised two handaxes, found at some distance to the south-east. Closer to the proposal site, Mesolithic and Neolithic flints, an Iron Age gold coin, a possible Saxon cremation cemetery and probable Saxon tumuli had been found. Several Bronze Age artefacts had been found in association with the River Thames, to the north and west, whilst a Middle Bronze Age burial group had been recorded to the south-west. The medieval centre of Walton-on-Thames lay a short distance to the north-east of the site; the line of the medieval High Street lay immediately to the east. Post-medieval sites recorded in the vicinity included three icehouses, a toll house and a 17th century manor house. It was concluded that the site had potential for archaeological remains, and that an evaluation would probably be necessary. [AIP]
