Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation and recording of the standing buildings was carried out on the site. The earliest features encountered were natural linear features cutting natural gravels. The earliest man made features were a series of pits of Saxo-Norman date and may relate to industrial activity. A second early medieval phase was identified, consisting of a series of pits ditches and post hole structures, representing a phase of industrial and settlement activity. A period of abandonment was identified above these deposits, which were then cut by medieval refuse pits. The site was used for tanning in the post-medieval period, with tanning pits, post-holes, linear features and wells being present. [Au(abr)] |
