Abstract:
Archaeological investigations were undertaken on three adjacent sites as part of an extensive program of archaeological investigation carried out in advance of the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Major discoveries included the clearly defined traces of a probable Neolithic longhouse. A sub-rectangular post hole structure to the south-east of the Pilgrim's Way site had been tentatively ascribed to the Bronze Age on the basis of it's form, and pottery retired from adjacent features. A Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age settlement was found on the White Horse site. A unique cremation deposit produced an exceptional group of transitional Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age artefacts. A metalworking area located on the eastern side of the settlement produced furnace bases and pits containing large quantities of slag. Several dispersed post hole structures and alignments, cremations, pit and animal burials had been found at the Pilgrim's Way and west of Boarley Farm sites, probably indicating occupation on or near the site. Evidence for medieval agricultural activity was also recorded. [Au(abr)]
