Abstract:
Evaluation trenching confirmed the presence of surviving medieval and later occupation remains within the proposed redevelopment area. Within Fienne Court the earliest archaeological deposits recorded consisted of a wide wall foundation, dating from the 13th century AD, set into the alluvial clays of the River Frome floodplain. Adjacent medieval occupation deposits yielded pottery of mid 13th to late 14th century date. Post-medieval levels were also recorded, including 18th and 19th century structural remains associated with properties on the western side of Union Street and with the construction of the Fry's No. 1 and 6 factories. No archaeological deposits were encountered within Sterling house predating its construction in the 1960s. [Au(abr)]
