Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development was undertaken. Handaxes and other flint implements dating from the Palaeolithic had been recorded in the surrounding area. Romano-British pottery and tile and a single sherd of early medieval pottery had been found nearby, whilst cropmarks with a possible medieval origin had been recorded to the north-west. The site lay on the extreme western side of the medieval manor of Farnham Royal, and had apparently not been developed before 1961. It was concluded that, owing to the site's potential for Palaeolithic artefacts and faunal remains, it would be desirable to record at least one full section through the deposits affected by redevelopment.
