Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment and site visit was carried out at the proposed redevelopment at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. The desk-based assessment located 42 sites from the HER and 162 Listed buildings within a 1km radius. The three HER finds located closest to the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School annexe site were a sculpted stone head of probable medieval date, an Elizabethan coin and a perforated stone of unknown function and date. The Listed buildings closest to the study site were a telephone kiosk outside the station and the remains of Penrith Castle. The site visit suggested that the earthworks or ditching associated with a southern extension of the castle grounds would be located underneath the road. Therefore certain archaeological remains could be expected on the site, especially later medieval and post-medieval period. [Au(adp)] |
