Abstract: |
A detailed geomagnetic survey was undertaken prior to the construction of new housing, garages and an access road. Images of the geophysical data obtained were dominated by a strong texture arising from soil disturbance created by recent ploughing. Nevertheless, it was possible to detect a number of features whose archaeological significance should be tested by a scheme of trial trenching: these included possible traces of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, a drain or ditched field boundary, and a small triangular enclosure. Of particular interest was the presence of two intense magnetic anomalies whose character was possibly consistent with the thermoremanent magnetism of in situ fired material, for example pottery kilns.
