Abstract: |
An assessment of the archaeological potential of the proposed development site at the former Penzance Laundry was undertaken. The site was divided into two distinct areas, each with a different history of use and different archaeological potential. Area 1 adjacent to Jennings and New Street was likely to have been a focus for medieval and later activity, and were all built over during the 19th century. There was scope there for evidence surviving below the made up ground and of pre-19th century use of the area for domestic/industrial functions. The central area of the site, Area 2, may not have been developed until the mid/late 19th century. Evidence may have survived of medieval or later tenement boundary walls, gardens, industrial pits, tunnels etc, left undisturbed under the foundations of the 19th century development. [Au] |
