Abstract: |
An archaeological examination of the moat at Gidlow Hall was undertaken as part of a management agreement with English Heritage. The aims of the study were to characterise the nature of the silts within the moat, to identify the level at which sensitive or significant archaeological deposits would be encountered and to provide a date range for the silting up of the moat. Finds from test pits indicated that the top of the silt deposits were of recent date, c.1880, and it was deemed reasonable to assume that the silts to this level could be removed without damage to any underlying archaeological deposits.
