Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of ten trial trenches, was undertaken. They showed that the Rifle shot and Shell Factory had been substantially truncated as a result of later constructions, but preservation outside of this area appeared to be good. Extensive, well preserved, remains of the north-south running western range of walls of the Grand Store were identified. Made ground was present in all trenches, probably dating to exercises of land reclamation prior to the construction of the Grand Store in 1806. Extensive industrial remains relating to the mid-19th century Rifle ordnance Factory and the old Forge were also located. No floor levels or machinery survived but internal and external wall foundations were evident. Of note was the extensive remenants of the flue systems of the Boiler House, and the foundation remains of the Engine House. Remains of structures from the 20th century were also apparent.
