Abstract:
A study of the archaeological and cultural heritage significance of the chapel and assessment of the implications of a proposed programme of repairs was undertaken. The chapel was the remaining portion of the medieval parish church, which was situated at the centre of the village of Cheam. The chapel was created from the chancel of St Dunstan's church when the old church was replaced by a larger one in the mid-19th century. This church had itself undergone several phases of restoration. The site of the chapel had potential for archaeological remains of previous settlement in the area and perhaps more likely, for the remains of the former church, which was still likely to be encountered in new grave digging, or in work around the walls of the church. The fabric of the chapel had potential to provide information about the date of origins of the building, the stages of alteration and extension, and the history of its conservation and repair. Surviving areas of wall plaster may have had traces of painted decoration, and the roof may have been an early feature. The fittings, especially the monuments of the chapel were of great intrinsic interest for study of their form and materials, and any suggestion as to their original location or setting. [Au(adp)]
