Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of two proposed development sites, separated by a lane, was undertaken. The sites lay within an Area of Archaeological Potential. Fossilised Palaeolithic trees and a small number of prehistoric artefacts had been found in the surrounding area, whilst the medieval route of Poplar High Street may have had Romano-British origins. Roman features and artefacts found in the area seemed to be concentrated within a corridor along the line of this street. Documentary evidence referred to medieval buildings, wharves and settlements in the area; post-medieval porcelain kilns were also known to have existed. It was concluded that the site had potential for prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval remains, and it was suggested that a geotechnical survey, perhaps followed by trial trenching, could indicate the extent of any modern disturbances.
