Abstract: |
Archaeological excavation of a barrow at Little Gaverigan Farm identified three structural components to the monument: a turf mound; a ditch; and the remanant traces of an annular stony bank. The monument was found to have developed from a single-ditched enclosed area with a central pavement of quartz rubble, possibly fulfilling a ceremonial function. In subsequent phases a number of pits were excavated into the base of the northern side of the ditch and the ditch recut following abandonment. Eventually the ditch was purposely infilled and during the final episode the area was sealed by a mound of peat turves. [AIP] |
