Abstract: |
The assessment established that Newbury was an archaeologically important area, displaying an extensive range of finds from all periods. The area around Bartholomew Street, running adjacent to the development site, had produced evidence of activity from the Mesolithic to the post-medieval period. Given the apparently undisturbed nature of the development area, there was some possibility that evidence of an earlier settlement would have survived, if it existed, in this location. Also of significance was the proximity of the development to burgage plots relating to buildings fronting Bartholomew Street. An evaluation was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
