Abstract:
The evaluation consisted of 21 trenches on the site which fronted The Street. The general sequence was virtually identical in all the trenches: natural clay overlain by thick, post-medieval ploughsoils. Against the frontage, the lowest ploughsoil sealed an 18th century ditch cutting a pit containing post-medieval pegtile. Two clusters of small features underlay the lowest ploughsoil. All the features contained charcoal and those in the first group also contained daub and pottery sherds of the late 12th to early 13th centuries AD. A small, largely ploughed out feature at the rear of the site also contained some charcoal and yielded four sherds of Neolithic or Bronze Age pottery. The fill was not sampled and, though no bone was seen during the excavation, the feature probably was a solitary cremation burial or an isolated hearth. [Au]
