Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a former market site allocated for redevelopment identified that it contained the site of Poulton Hall, a building demolished in 1932. The Hall was recorded as having a 16th or 17th century external appearance, but a surviving doorway from it, re-erected in the grounds of Morecombe Town Hall, was medieval. The site occupied by Poulton Hall was probably one of the original medieval crofts of Poulton. In the surrounding area, a Neolithic spearhead had been recovered, and a number of post-medieval structures had been recorded on the SMR, including two churches, a station, a theatre, a pump and the Central Pier, Morecombe. It was concluded that the foundations of buildings associated with Poulton Hall were likely to exist within the development area. Evaluation by trial trenching was recommended. [AIP] |
