Abstract:
Excavations in advance of the construction of the basement of a large shopping centre, and of associated groundworks, uncovered extensive archaeological remains. Prehistoric finds, such as worked flint, were recovered. The main occupation, as evidenced by post-holes for timber buildings, and by rubbish pits, began in the Late Saxon period, and was continuous thereafter. At least one Late Saxon timber building, possibly with gravel floor and internal partitions, was present. A north-south ditch was thought to represent the boundary between the medieval tenements and fields to the west. There were a number of small gullies and ditches, presumably for surface drainage. There was also evidence for medieval metalworking. An agricultural or garden soil built up over the site in the medieval period protecting some of the earliest evidence from damage from later medieval and post-medieval pit cutting and building construction.
