Abstract:
A desktop survey was undertaken in order to assess the archaeological potential of a c.1700 sq. m plot of land situated to the east of the Market Place, Swaffham. The site lay in the centre of the historic town of Swaffham, the origins of which may have dated back to the Saxon period. There was evidence to suggest that the study area was used as a garden and backyard attached to properties on the Market Place frontage from at least the mid 18th century. However, a study of modern property boundaries and evidence from aerial photographs suggested that the northern part of the site may have once formed part of the churchyard to its north. Extension of the churchyard into this area was likely to have pre-dated the development of the Market Place frontage during the medieval period. The proposed development could be expected to have a high impact upon any surviving archaeological deposits at the site. This impact would be particularly high in the northern part of the site given the location of the proposed housing in this area and the fact that the area appeared to have been relatively free of buildings throughout its recent history.
