Abstract: |
The Side air-raid shelters forme part of the SAM of the castle of Newcastle upon Tyne and lay below the Black Gate, the 12th century barbican of the castle. The rear wall of the shelters was formed by the massive retaining wall supporting the embankment upon which the castle stood. The proposal to demolish two-thirds of the shelters raised some archaeological concerns. A watching brief was maintained during the demolition, no archaeological remains were damaged during the work.
