Abstract: |
The Court was a medieval fortified manor house within a moat, surrounded by its own Deer Park. Improvements were made during the time that the Berkeley family were in residence, from 1491 until well into the 16th century. A detailed survey from 1548-49 survived. Some of the moat which was still wet and ruins of some of the medieval and early post-medieval structure remained. Part had been incorporated within the present farmhouse. There were proposals to convert the 16th century and later barn into a dwelling. This would have included the demolition of adjacent structures that were largely modern but did include elements of older buildings that lined the edges of the base, or outer, court. Remains of a substantial wall, probably once the curtain wall, survived along part of the eastern side of the development area. There was a quadrant-shaped features, possibly the base of a tower, on the inside of the moat to the south of the barn. [Au] |
