Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for tree-planting, car-parking and a perimeter road link identified that archaeological remains were visible from the ground and on aerial photographs of the site. Four specific areas of importance were highlighted. Principal archaeological features included earthwork embankments, comprising field boundaries shown in 1769 and possibly of medieval or early post-medieval origin, and field systems within these boundaries. Documentary, aerial photographic and field inspection evidence combined to indicate medieval field systems and/or settlement. Two post-medieval farmhouses with barns and a possible barn or cowshed also lay within the proposal area, and 19th century clay pits had been noted. It was recommended that development proposals should be modified to limit damage to features at the site, and that topographical survey and trial trenching should be undertaken in selected areas in advance of construction works. A watching brief during development was also recommended. [AIP] |
