Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that evidence for Roman and medieval activity had been recorded in the near vicinity, and that the proposed line of Roman Stane Street lay along the site's eastern boundary. Roman artefacts found nearby included a pitcher, a coin and an iron spearhead, whilst medieval pottery and 13th century features had also been recorded. Prehistoric occupation evidence was known in the surrounding area. Cartographic evidence indicated that the proposal site itself had been developed by the mid to late 18th century. It appeared to have undergone a high degree of disturbance in association with large-scale terracing of the natural slope. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during development works. [AIP] |
