Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at the proposed Arkell Prospect Exploratory Drill Site, at Chaldon Herring. Hillwash deposits, to a maximum depth of 1.3m, were present in the shallow coomb on the east side of the area. These deposits contained no diagnostic artefacts and could not be dated. Numerous subsoil features on the site were considered to be periglacial, but two features of archaeological origin were a possible quarry containing a small quantity of worked flint in its backfill, and a ditch containing a small quantity of Bronze Age pottery and flint flakes. The feature may have been part of a later prehistoric field system. No evidence for funerary deposits associated with the barrow to the south could be identified. The evaluation showed there to be a low potential for the presence of significant archaeological remains on the site. [Au] |
