Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at the site of an enclosure which had been recorded during a survey of previously undocumented sites in the western Howgill Fells. Approximately 40% of the structure was excavated, and a medieval building which had been constructed on a level platform was revealed. The structure was of drystone walls, and may have been contemporary with nearby earthworks, field boundaries and other remains. Late medieval and possible 10th century pottery was recovered. It was recommended that future work should investigate the local medieval settlement pattern and agricultural infrastructure. [AIP] |
