Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring of test-pits excavated to locate the line of an exisiting main running from Hanging Langford was undertaken where the pipeline passed through an area of earthwork remains surrounding the exisiting church at Little Langford. Features and deposits revealed comprised a posthole, filled with a layer of unworked burnt flint and sealed below a layer containing sherds of 3rd/4th century Roman pottery; a shallow ditch feature; a series of deposits thought to represent the fills of a large pit or ditch; and a substantial deposit of flint nodules sealed by the remains of a crushed chalk and flint surface probably representing the remains of an earlier trackway associated with St Nicholas' Church. Ceramic building material and pottery of medieval and post-medieval date was also recovered. [AIP] |
