Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken on behalf of the University of York in advance of the building of the new Computer Science building and formed the first phase of a wider evaluation of the area which included the possible burial mound known as Siward's Howe. In addition to the scheduled ancient monument there were surviving ridge and furrow earthworks on the hill and many chance discoveries had been reported from the area in the past, including burials. Geophysical and topographic surveys were carried out and three trial trenches, focusing on the area to be directly affected by building work, were excavated. Ridge and furrow was once more extensive across the hill, but the evaluation showed that more recent agricultural activity and modern building work had reduced visibility of these earthworks. The only significant archaeological feature other than this was a small isolated pit which could not be dated or associated with any other archaeological evidence. Siward's Howe itself and the immediate area around had not yet been evaluated. [Sec] |
