Abstract: |
An assessment of desk-based sources and an evaluation by trial trenching were undertaken prior to the refurbishment of two adjoining shops, their separation into two retail units and the conversion of the upper storeys into flats. Number 6 Baytree Hill was also to be extended to the rear. The assessment collected information regarding the history of the site in the 19th and 20th centuries. No finds or features of medieval date were discovered during the excavations despite the medieval origin of the town. A wall regarded as the earliest structure on the site appeared to represent part of the large outbuilding range shown on a map of 1880. Various layers excavated were also deemed to be of post-medieval date. It appeared that any medieval occupation to the rear of the shop had been removed by later development. [Au(adp)] |
