Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation in advance of proposed development at The Vaults, Tenbury Wells, was carried out on behalf of The First National Bank plc.. The site lies within the historic core of the town, in an area important to an understanding of the town's medieval economy and development. A range of medieval deposits were excavated and recorded, including post and stake holes, and structural slots. These deposits are interpreted as representing the remains of timber structures, possibly buildings or stock enclosures. Although they contained no dating evidence, these deposits are sealed by a soil layer dated to the 14th century, and are thus considered to be early medieval in date. A shallow linear depression in the surface of these deposits is interpreted as a hollow-way, which may have formerly linked the Church of St Mary with the Martley Road. Associated with these deposits were small assemblages of artefactual and ecofactual material.[AIP] |
