Abstract:
A programme of archaeological motoring of contractors' works was maintained during extensive alteration and renovation of the church interior. Alteration work involved the removal of Victorian seating and decking from the nave and aisle; the lifting of flagstones between the rows of seating; and the reduction of floor levels to allow the insertion of a new floor of concrete over hardcore. The boiler house in the north-west corner of the church was rebuilt to a larger size. A service trench was cut along the full length of the path from the village street to the church door, and minor excavations were carried out along the south side of the church, to improve surface drainage. No unambiguous trace of the medieval periods of church were encountered: information was found, however, which cast some light on the two 19th century churches on the site. No significant human remains were encountered. [Au(abr)]
