Abstract: |
A watching brief was held over groundworks associated with the connection of gas supplies to new and refurbished buildings. A limestone wall was discovered and was probably the wall of a cellar below 36 Castle Way. It could have dated to any time between the 13th and 18th centuries. A brick wall appeared to have been built up against the limestone wall, and may have been associated with the construction of a light well or steps. The ashy mortar suggested an 18th or 19th century date. A small deposit of soil and gravel containing fragments of medieval roof slate survived in places beneath the pavement, where it had not been removed by modern services. It may have been a street build-up. [Au(adp)] |
