Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken on the site of a 13th century Franciscan Friary that was finally demolished in 1891. A line of walling was encountered marking the north eastern limit of the site. The walls were thought to have been the last remnants of buildings on pre-existing burgage plots that were swept away by the insertion of the Friary into the town. Ten graves were identified, no direct dating evidence was obtained but it was shown that they were part of a planned cemetery enclosed within the Friary precinct wall. Remains of the Shire Hall, built in 1891 were also identified. [AIP] |
