Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the development of the site. Trench 1 was positioned to assess the survival of deposits associated with the Marriot Wheel and later the White Lead Works. Trench 2 was located to investigate deposits pertaining to the oldest known structures relating to the White Lead Works. The archaeological deposits in Trench 1 were truncated by the structures associated with the tram and bus depot. These later structures delimited an area that appeared to preserve deposits and material pertaining to the technology and working conditions within the lead works. It was likely that this small area around Trench 1 was the only significantly undisturbed area on site. In Trench 2, the archaeology of the lead works had been cleared to its foundations. The artefacts recovered clustered in one area and demonstrated some mixing and residually. Consequently, the archaeological potential of this material was low. The archaeology within the application area was likely to have been more in character with the deposits encountered in Trench 2 than in the eastern part of Trench 1 and had low overall potential. The exception to this was the small area around Trench 1 where significant deposits relating to the lead works appeared to have been preserved. [Au(abr)]
