Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a small housing development. Prehistoric activity had been recorded in the surrounding area, and important Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic material had been found in the vicinity. A boundary bank lay along the western side of the site, and a bank had existed to the south prior to redevelopment in the 1970s. During the evaluation, medieval and post-medieval pottery, clay pipe fragments and struck and burnt flints were recovered, and a post-medieval boundary ditch was recorded. The general character of the flint assemblage suggested a Mesolithic date, and the relative scarcity of material, compared to discoveries in an adjacent field, suggested that the site lay on the periphery of the flint scatter. It was concluded that no further archaeological work would be necessary. [AIP] |
