Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that occasional artefacts of Iron Age and Roman date had been found in the general proximity. None had been found in association with contemporary occupation evidence, although they suggested a sizeable settlement in the town. The proposal site lay within a SAM, the site of a Saxon settlement enclosure. Saxon pottery and other artefacts dating from the 6th-10th centuries had previously been found in close proximity, but no actual settlement remains had thus far been identified. A large late Saxon ditch was located just to the north-east of the site. However, no occupation evidence had been found north of this ditch, implying that it had probaby formed the settlement boundary. Cumulatively, the evidence suggested that the proposal site had lain at the periphery of, but just within, the late Saxon settlement enclosure, which could itself have been an expansion of the preceding early and middle Saxon occupation area. Cartographic evidence indicated that buildings had once been located at the north-east corner of the site. These were likely to have damaged any archaeological deposits in the area. Further general disturbance was likely to have occurred in the same general area, due to the apparent reduction of the ground surface to permit vehicular access. [Au(abr)]
