Abstract: |
Archaeological excavations were carried out on the proposed site of a bungalow and cottage at the rear of Malaga Cottage. The proposal site lay between the church and the Square, an area which was at the heart of the medieval historic settlement of Week St. Mary. Five sample trenches were excavated, two of which revealed an east west aligned medieval churchyard boundary ditch containing an assemblage of 12th/13th century pottery within its fills. Pottery of a similar date was recovered from two shallow north south oriented linear features, which were interpreted as marking-out trenches for medieval burgage plots. Post-medieval activity was revealed in re-cutting of the medieval boundary ditch and various settlement and agricultural features. [AIP] |
