Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a quarry, which lay within a designated Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, identified that a hoard of coins of the Romano-British period and a post-medieval lime kiln had been recorded at the site. A probable prehistoric monolith lay nearby, and the remnant of a Bronze Age field system had been identified during an archaeological evaluation to the north-east. Iron Age hillforts and Iron Age/Romano-British field systems and occupation sites lay in the wider surrounding area. The site of a deserted medieval village lay to the south of the proposal site, and three further post-medieval lime kilns had been recorded in the area. It was concluded that there was insufficient evidence to justify an archaeological evaluation of the site, but that a watching brief should be carried out during an initial earthmoving exercise.
