Abstract: |
The evaluation was carried out to test the theory that a ditch forming part of the Chichester Entrenchments ran across the site, as suggested on an 18th century plan. A machine cut trench was excavated across the entire width of the site, to a maximum depth of 1.2m. The stratigraphy comprised 300mm of topsoil overlying the natural Head Deposits, with substantial modern disturbance evident. No trace of the ditch or any other archaeological features were encountered. Artefacts were limited to 19th and 20th century bottles, china and butchered animal bones, presumably waste from the nearby hospital. [Au] |
