Abstract:
The evaluation consisted of two sites and a total of ten trenches in advance of the proposed residential development of the site. The land adjacent to Barton Mill Road produced a probable Early Neolithic flint assemblage, mostly flakes, ditches, pits and possible post holes, which could have been late prehistoric or Roman in date. Most other features and deposits were of post-medieval date and related to garden and domestic activities associated with the 18th century Barton House. The island site appeared to have almost entirely remained agricultural in nature, later levels were sealed by a thick deposit of fragmented shale, probably imported colliery waste, related to 20th century developments on the island.
