Abstract: |
Human remains had been exposed below the modern road surface during street repairs. ARCUS was commissioned by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council to undertake an archaeological investigation of the remains and the surrounding deposits. Three individual scatters of human bone were identified in varying states of preservation. These burials were of medieval date and belonged to the churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene which had occupied the site previous to the Corn Exchange Market. A pottery sherd dating from the Roman period and a fragment of glass of 18th century date were also recovered from deposits surrounding the remains, indicating the disturbed nature of the burials.
