Abstract: |
The site was situated between the Scheduled Monument of the town defences and the railway line and was known to have been marshland. Prehistoric deposits had been found near the site under the marshland deposits; a Roman road may also have crossed part of the site. The sites location suggested its use as a harbour in the medieval period or as a dump, which would have led to the raising of the ground, making it usable. [Au(abr)] |
