Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it occupied what appeared from cartographic evidence to have been the western end of a large tenement plot, one of several which still substantially survived in the village. These tenements had certainly been in existence by the early 18th century. Significant evidence of medieval and post-medieval pottery manufacture, including several medieval kilns, had been recorded within the village; this had been closely related to the industry at nearby Potterspury, which was important over a wide area of North Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and South Northamptonshire. No evidence of prehistoric activity had been recorded in the near vicinity of the site, although possible long and round barrows had once lain to the west of Moor End, a possible ring ditch had been noted to the south, and a small number of prehistoric artefacts had been found in the surrounding area. Iron Age features and pottery had also been recorded on the line of the Yardley Gobion bypass. A major Roman road, Watling Street, passed through the western end of the parish, but little evidence of Roman activity had been recorded in the area. No Saxon remains had been identified within the parish. Medieval sites recorded in the area included a former moated site, a former deer park, possible quarries, and earthworks thought to have represented the remains of medieval buildings. [AIP]
