Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed redevelopment site, which lay adjacent to the medieval market place in Warwick, was undertaken. The market may have dated from the foundation of the town itself, in 914, although the location of the original market place was uncertain. The proposal site occupied parts of three of five probable original properties along the southern side of the Market Place. An inn known as The Woolpack had lain on the site from at least 1652, although the existing buildings, which were Grade II Listed, dated from the later 18th and early 19th centuries. It was found that the site had been cellared; any medieval remains present would have been considerably disturbed, although pockets of medieval stratigraphy could have survived. [Au(adp)] |
