Abstract: |
Nine evaluation trenches revealed four phases of occupation from the Mid Saxon period onwards. It was not generally possibly to differentiate Saxon, early medieval and later medieval contexts due to the techniques employed but clearly the conventual complex spread over the entire site and beyond. Many surviving deposits were truncated by cultivation, suggesting they are earlier rather than later. Remains of a masonry wall, a shallow robber trench for a similar wall, and evidence of earlier or associated timber structures were also located, along with pits and ditches. Three distinct episodes of post-Dissolution cultivation were observed and the metalling may have been of similar date. Most of the western and northern perimeter walls were of 18th-20th century date.
