Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out at a development site within the Castlefield area of Manchester. The first evidence of occupation in the vicinity dated from the 1st century AD, when a Roman settlement and fort had been established. However, the area had remained largely undeveloped until c. 1760, when the last stages of the Bridgewater Canal had been built. The most notable characteristic of this canal terminal had been a huge clover-shaped weir system used to control the water input from the River Medlock. It was considered possible that remains of the weir could have survived below the make-up of the 19th century wharf. During the watching brief, a vast amount of 19th century pottery and a small area of stone block surface which may have represented the remains of the weir were observed. No further archaeological work was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
