Abstract:
(An area at Site E, west of Broom, was investigated on behalf of ì\nthe Department of Transport as part of a programme of excavation work ì\nundertaken in advance of the construction of the A435 Norton ì\nLenchwick Bypass. Evaluation trenches across the line of a ì\ncropmark 'washing line' linear boundary with associated ì\nenclosures (WA 4908), in the area of a flint scatter, had ì\nencountered features of late Bronze Age and Saxon date [see AIP ì\nrecord C.80.0005].)\n\nParts of a Neolithic/Bronze Age funerary and/or ritual site were ì\nexcavated. At least three probable Neolithic cremation pits were ì\nfound within the area; two of them contained parts of shattered ì\nGrooved Ware pots, although in neither case did the pot contain ì\nthe cremation. The pits also contained grave goods including two ì\npolished stone axes, flint scrapers, an arrowhead and blades. Of ì\nspecial importance was an unusually small ring ditch (4.40m in ì\ndiameter), which enclosed the remains of a pyre. The pyre had ì\nevidently collapsed and dispersed a cremated human skeleton ì\nacross the inner area of the ring. No evidence for either a ì\ncentral mound or outer bank was found. Adjacent to the ring ditch ì\nthere was a shallow pit which contained some 600 sherds of later ì\nBronze Age pottery. Saxon features were represented by a group of ì\nsix probable sunken floored buildings or grubenhauser, three ì\nlarge (3.5 - 5m across) and three small (2 - 3m across). A ì\ncluster of undated post holes which could have belonged to a hall ì\nor other timber structure was also revealed.\n\n[See also: general entry for rescue excavations at Sites C (C1-4, ì\nC5), D, E and F (AIP record E.80.0003); separate entries for ì\nexcavations at Sites C (C1-4, C5), D and F (AIP records E.80.0004 ì\n- 0005, 0007); and entries for subsequent salvage recording (AIP ì\nrecords E.80.???? - ????).]
